10-29-10 Blackthorn Pub and Pizza (St. Louis)

Another place we stopped while in St. Louis was Blackthorn Pub and Pizza in St. Louis.

We arrived after happy hour and there was nowhere to sit so we had to stalk tables that might be leaving. After finding a table after 20 or 30 minutes in this dingy bar, we ordered from the bar. About the only things they have on the menu are pizza, salads and beer/alcohol.

We decided on a 12 inch Chicago deep dish style pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms and sausage. Our first sign of the Apocalypse was that when we ordered we were told it would take at least 1 1/2 hours for the pizza to be done. WTF? All I could think is this pizza better be damn good if I have to wait that long. To bide the time we were going to have wait for the pizza and with some beers already in our system, I thought it best to get some small salads so I ordered a Caesar plate and a house plate. This time, there wasn't a time given on how long it would take to get the salads. It would turn out to be almost as long as the pizza. It explained why it took a while to find somewhere to sit. Just hope you're lucky enough to be on a good schedule with someone who is leaving.

The entire place reminded me of Kelly's in Westport with all the writing on the walls, in the bathrooms, wherever they could write, there it would be. I guess it could give it some kind of charm and honestly I know that it makes me sound snobbish, but I'm not in college anymore so it was lost on me.

To kill time, they have a jukebox, a dart board, some video games, a few TVs, and shuffleboard. Maybe they had something else but I don't remember.

When your orders are ready, they yell your name over a speaker. This was the second sign of the night. When you order, tell them some nickname (so your orders are not confused with other orders. Unfortunately since I told them Jon, there was another Jo(h)n who I swear took at least one of our salads and almost our pizza. So he was Jo(h)n A and I was Jon J and over a speaker they do sound the same.

I got my house salad probably within 30 minutes, but the Caesar was nowhere to be found. I went back up to the bar and asked about it and they said they gave it to us - but I think Jo(h)n A took it. They had to make another one which took another 20 minutes. Honestly, how long does it take to make a salad? And another observation...just because you order before someone else does not mean you'll get your food before them. It definitely wasn't the case with the salads or the pizza as others were getting served way before we were.

Finally after an eternity, the pizza arrived. It had a spicy sauce and was what we ordered but after an hour and 45 minutes waiting for it, it wasn't anything special and definitely not worth the wait. We had a few pieces and boxed up the rest of it for a late night snack.

After we told some friends where we went, they told us they have another location called something else which gets the pizzas out in 20-30 minutes. I don't know why it takes so long here but it must be their claim to fame. I was so over it, I didn't even care to take pictures. It just wasn't our cup of tea, beer or pizza. And it's not the cheapest pizza either.

If you're in St. Louis and have time to spare (or if it's late at night and you're drunk and have all the time in the world), check out Blackthorn Pub and Pizza. But since we told you about the wait, you can't complain. Blackthorn is located 3735 Wyoming Street in St. Louis, MO.
