3-5-11 Danny Edward's BBQ

We were inspired to try this place by another food blogger, kclunchspots.com, although I've been there several times in their past and now their present.

Back before the P&L District was created, there used to be a small building called Lil Jake's Eat It & Beat It on the corner of 13th and Grand. This small building had a lot of history being downtown with it's big pink pig outside, limited seating inside and delicious BBQ. When discussions to have the P&L District started, the building was bought out by the city and torn down, to be a parking lot for the Sprint Center. I would visit that corner building for lunch until it was torn down. One of my favorites was the low carb special. You chose three meats and you get cottage cheese as a side.

Danny Edwards BBQ, as it is now called, is still a great BBQ place, with new and bigger digs at 2900 Southwest Blvd. Now you can sit down and don't need to eat it and beat it because they have a lot of room and still have that great BBQ they've always been known for.

When we walked in, that great smell of BBQ immediately hit us and our mouths began to salivate. Pavlov's dog, indeed --just add the smell of cooked meat! We were seated and they have table service to take your orders, refill drinks and make sure you are taken care of.

JE ordered a burnt end sandwich with seasoned fries (the old location didn't do fries or deep fry anything) and a cup of Mexican chili (why not, we're on the Blvd!) which is served only in season.

I ordered a large beef and turkey sandwich with a cup of the Mexican chili as well. The chili came with tortillas.

The chili was divine. Big chucks of pork with spices and a little kick to make you want to eat more and more of it.

The sandwiches were a nice big portion of meats which were even better with their house sauce. We love a good BBQ sauce on good BBQ meat and together, they were great.

I was happy to see that the old standby, the low carb special was still on the menu. I'll have to get that for nostalgia's sake the next time I visit.

As noted, they have table service now and they are excellent. If you took a sip of your drink, they instantly refilled it. They were very attentive and friendly and even changed the TV channel so we could watch the MU-KU basketball game.

Do yourself and your stomach a favor by eating here soon.

JE said his BBQ list shifted after eating at Danny Edward's.
1. Big T's BBQ
2. Danny Edward's BBQ
3. Oklahoma Joe's (previously #2)

If his list could change, yours might too. Experience another side of KC BBQ and say hello to the pink concrete pig that sits outside.

Danny Edward's BBQ is located at 2900 Southwest Blvd in KC MO.
