4-2-11 El Camino Real

This was the place that started our food adventures -- where JE took me to get me out of the house after a knee operation -- and little did we know that the experience would have us blogging about the places we went to eat.

We didn't review the place at the time, but after a year and a half, we decided to go back and make it official. Mia joined us for this adventure in KCK.

The authenticity of Mexican food and easily be summed up by one thing: making homemade tortillas in the dining room of the restaurant. El Camino Real is not a big place by any means but when you walk in, you'll see where they make the tortillas and cook your food in the front of the building.

Like most Mexican restaurants in town, you'll get baskets of chips and some salsas - usually one mild and one hot. The chips were good and the smoky flavored hot salsa was a great dipping sauce. But don't fill up on just the chips and salsa or you'll miss out on some good food. The server also brings an assortment of condiments, typically for your tacos, but you could always put it on your burrito or whatever you order if you want. There were limes, cilantro, onions, salsa, and some pickled veggies.

Mia ordered a chicken taco, pablano taco and a pastor (pork and pineapple) taco.

JE ordered a carnitas burrito and an asada taco with some horchata (as Mia says, it's like the remaining milk from your bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch). His burrito came with a good portion of rice and refried beans. You can see how eager he was to eat while I took the picture.

I ordered a pollo burrito and an asana taco with some horchata on the side as well. My order also came with rice and refried beans.

Mia said "oh my good lord" when she bit into her chicken taco. It was that good. She also complemented the rice saying it reminded her of an ex-boyfriend's mother or grandmother (I think) who made rice which was the same flavor. She wasn't too fond of the pablano taco, but she did like the pastor taco.

JE and I both enjoyed the burritos. They melt queso fresco or some other delicious cheese over it which makes it even better. Big chunks of meat await you when you get to the gooey insides.

The asada tacos were also popular with us. They're like street tacos and we put cilantro and squeeze lime juice in them which is a good combination.

We could have probably eaten everything off the menu. We think the table next to us might have as they kept getting more and more food and there were only 4 of them.

Service was great for the small room and it was and always is crowded when we eat there.

Mia said that anytime she goes with us to a Mexican restaurant, she thinks it's the best one she's been to.

This is our #1 pick for authentic Mexican in the area. They have any type of Mexican food you'd want. See what you think at El Camino Real 903 N 7th St in downtown KCK.
