Get to this new restaurant on 39th Street before everyone else discovers it or you will be waiting in a long line.
Anna's Oven recently opened seven weeks ago on 39th Street across from Saigon 39.
They serve hearty, delicious and freshly made comfort food at low prices. JE said, "this place will be packed in the fall and winter."
JE had the meatloaf dinner. Two slices of meatloaf made with ground beef and Mendolia's Italian sausage that came with mashed potatoes and gravy, some steamed veggies and some bread for $8; a stunning value. He also ordered a side of mac and cheese and it nearly reduced him to tears it was so creamy and delicious. They have a blanco mac and cheese on the menu that looks just as good.
I decided to try the traditional lasagna, but earlier that morning, the place was discussed on the Walt Bodine show and was slammed with people. So on this Friday afternoon, they were out of the traditional lasagna. That was ok so I subbed the spicy lasagna (Italian sausage, pork and red pepper flakes) which really wasn't that spicy, but it was oh so good. It also came with some steamed veggies and bread. I also got a side of dipping bread with oil. The garlic and fresh basil in the dipping oil was delicious.
I'm a sucker for different desserts. I mean, I like the traditional stuff, but if you mix different things together, chances are I'm going to try it. Not that I wasn't stuff enough from what we had, but I was coaxed into trying their blueberry pineapple cobbler with roasted pecans and vanilla ice cream. If I could have licked the plate and had some dignity left, I would have. It was that good!
There are other items on the menu we still want to try so we'll definitely be back to Anna's Oven. Check it out at 1809 W 39th Street in KCMO.
