9-17-11 Johnny's BBQ

On a rainy September morning, we drove to Mission, Kansas to a BBQ restaurant that was completely on our radar. Apparently this place was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives but we must have missed that episode. Here's....Johnny's BBQ!

When we got there, JE remarked, "this feels like a roadhouse in the middle of nowhere."

We ordered the combo plate, 2 iced teas and 2 small chilis. All of it was satisfying for $27.

The combo plate came with beef, pork, ribs, sausage, fries, bread, pickles and topped off with an onion ring. What's a better way to try just about everything in a BBQ restaurant than this?

This was definitely enough food for two people where you wouldn't feel like you overate at all. The meats were good, solid, smoked meats. The fries were ok (Ore-ida possibly? DYK Ore-ida stands for Oregon and Idaho, like where the potatoes come from?), but probably not hand cut. The ribs had the meat falling off them and were finger licking messy and delicious. And the pickles, you can't go wrong with dill pickles. Who ever decided that dill pickles go good with BBQ?

The BBQ sauce seemed to be ketchup based with a small kick which was ok.

The chili was homemade and was delicious on a cold, wet day. You could tell it wasn't from a can.

Service was really quick. You order at the counter, seat yourself and wait for the food to be delivered to your table.

The dining room filled up very quickly, but people don't seem to linger so you probably won't have issues finding somewhere to sit. Here is your kid warning -- people bring them, they're loud and usually underfoot.

The decor is simple and displays BBQ sauces from around the country.

We'll add this to our BBQ to go list. And as an added bonus, you didn't have someone screaming, "Hi, may I help you?"

Check out Johnny's BBQ located on 5959 Broadmoor in Mission, KS.
