9-6-11 Chez Elle

My work spouse, Kim, had a $20 coupon to use before it expired so she suggested we go over lunch and use it up. That dropped us at Chez Elle at 17th and Summit.

Chez Elle is a coffeehouse and creperie. Crepes are a French food. Think of a French IHOP that has thin pancakes stuffed with your toppings (sweet or savory). It was my first experience with crepes and I dare say, I liked it. I didn't have anything to compare it to as I've never been to France, but Kim, the world traveler that she is, had some food experiences in Paris with this stuff.

We both selected the Chez Elle which had chicken, mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, mozzarella, pesto and marinara.

It was pretty big, as you can tell, but the lightness of the crepe helps you eat the whole thing and sometimes want more. The fillings were good and tasty.

I also tried their French onion soup. I like French onion dip with chips so I thought I'd like this too. And I was hoping it would come with the traditional cheese melted over the top. Alas, my hopes were crushed as there wasn't melted cheese over the small bowl of soup.

Outside of the no melted cheese on top, I really didn't know what to expect of the soup except for the onions. The beef broth was good, the onions were good and the melted cheese inside the soup was good too. I can say now that I'm probably not a fan of French onion soup so I'll stick with the dip that I like.

If you're not in the mood for a savory crepe, you can get a sweet crepe. Kim decided on the Paris which was Nutella (oh hell yes!), bananas and whipped cream. Just picture the crepe above with these ingredients in it. It was  pretty rich and it was a little struggle getting through this sweet crepe, but it was definitely bueno (sorry, I only know a little Spanish!). For a sweet treat, definitely try the Paris.

And finally, don't forget, this is a coffeehouse. Kim and I have this thing where we've tried chai tea lattes in about any place that serves them and we rank our favorites. We even took a Communiversity class together about chai tea. With that in mind, we both had chai tea lattes at Chez Elle and we were impressed. They came in the traditional big coffee cup with a foamy head and was really really good. It complimented the Nutella and banana crepe perfectly.

The staff at Chez Elle was helpful and patient with us as we tried to decide on everything to order. We had questions and they answered them. Thanks staff!

Check out Chez Elle. It's very easy to get to from downtown and you may broaden your horizons with a French food and a great coffeehouse. Chez Elle is located at 1713 Summit Street in KCMO.
