10-8-11 Chapala Restaurante Mexicano

On a weekend when Jon was playing (and winning) in a softball tournament, JE, Mia and Lisa decided to have their own food adventure after going to Urban Mining. Welcome to Chapala Restaurante Mexicano.

This nice little restaurant is located at Truman Road and Hardesty...and that's what makes it scary. JE didn't think he'd ever been that far east on Truman Road. Past all the discount furniture stores, funeral homes and a big cemetery, they arrived at an orange painted building to have their "we were exactly the same in college" lunch with his dear friends Mia and Lisa.

There was one person working the dining room and one person in the kitchen this Saturday afternoon. The menu is large and easy to navigate. Chips and salsa are complimentary.

JE had the #8 combo that included an enchilada, taco, tamale and burrito for $8.95 and a horchata to drink. Lisa had another combo and Mia got two pastor tacos (her favorite) and a side of rice.

JE was horrified when his meal showed up covered in shredded lettuce (not his favorite) and melted shredded cheese. He should have opted for something more authentic. It was still good and he didn't think the shredded lettuce came out of a SYSCO (the devil!) bag.

Lisa's meal was much the same.

Mia's tacos were served on freshly made tortillas. JE was jealous. She said the meat was a bit burned but the tortillas were awesome.

JE was really hoping for a place that could rival El Camino Real so he wouldn't have to drive all the way to KCK. But Chapala didn't measure up. He's still a fan of this place across from the St. John School of Theology and it is apparent they have many obvious regulars.

See what you think at Chapala Restaurante Mexicano located 5224 E Truman Road in KCMO.

  1. A friend--with whom I've eaten at Chapala many times--clued me in that if you want authentic, never order the combo. According to her, the combo is there for the comfort of non-Mexicans.
