"We're not ready yet." This was 11:19 and they open at 11 am. And that was our cue to leave and never return.
So we thought about the other options that Mia had held and JE said, "Let's go to Tortilleria San Antonio" on Kansas Avenue. We were happy that fate intervened and drove us away from a restaurant that clearly did not want our business.
The parking lot was full and there was a man selling rosaries outside. We knew this place would be a true adventure. We're pretty sure this place is not accustomed to seeing non-Latinos or Mexicans or whatever the PC word would be.
In the front of this grocery store and butcher shop, they make the tortillas. Stand in line just to the right and order your food.
JE asked for an asada taco and a pastor taco, then asked the man behind the counter what his favorite burrito was. After a bit of attitude from him, he said, "I like the beef." JE ordered that too with a horchata and the bill was less than $9. JE had never tried pastor before because he hates pineapple, but he gave it a shot and loved it (plus there were not chunks of pineapple in his face).
Mia ordered 3 pastor tacos. This lady loves her pastor! She was so hungry that she started eating before we all got our food.
After you order, you get into another line to get your food. That's where they have four or five different salsas ranging from mild to really hot from right to left. The really hot salsa looked like nacho cheese. All of the salsas were great and you can even buy them from the fridge. One of them set Mia's tongue on fire. There are also onions, cilantro and lime wedges for your tacos.
My ordering process was a bit hampered. I looked at the sign and knew what I wanted to order but just about everything I wanted (like a chicken burrito or ranchero steak burrito), they didn't have. I thought it was kind of odd that they had a butcher shop there but no chicken. I decided on an asada taco, carnitas taco and an asada burrito. My food was good. It definitely tasted authentic and the flavors blended together well. I'm not adventurous with hot salsas but even the mildest had a little kick to it.
This place is packed with people buying all kinds of meat from the butcher counter or produce from the store. We may have been sent to another country, but that country was awesome.
We need a couple of places like this on the east side of town because everyone would be way more happy.
You can see we don't have pictures. We were so hungry and the food was so good that we didn't get a chance to photograph them. You'll have to experience it. It's cheap and delicious (even if they don't have a full menu as displayed!).
Tortilleria San Antonio is located in KCK at the corner of Kansas and Mill Street (830 Kansas Ave).
