We look for the next El Camino Real, Leo's Diner, and anything that would take us to the next level of great food. WE GIVE UP.
We went to Jerry's Cafe and left underwhelmed.
Props to the man who wants to have a great diner with like ten tables -- and people hovering and watching to see if you are done yet. It makes your dining experience really stressful.
JE had the patty melt. When he ordered it, the waitress asked, "Fries?". He said yes with a side of mayo (he's so European like that). Nowhere on the menu did it say the fries were ala cart or that they would cost $3! In fact, the fries are not on the menu. He felt a little raped.
The patty melt was heavy on the onions and the fries were not worth the $3.
I ordered a chicken sandwich which had Greek spices on it, plus a cup of homemade chili. I'm a sucker for homemade chili and at this point, I wish I hadn't been.
The chicken sandwich had so much spice on it, that's about all you could taste. The chicken breast (?) was pounded thin and was also dry. It required many glasses of water. I even kept the condiments (tomato, onions and whatever else was on there) so I would have some kind of juice on the sandwich.
If that wasn't bad enough, the chili was ten times worse. This has to be the WORST chili I've ever had. It had the taste and consistency of a huge can of tomato paste. That's all I could taste. I think there was some meat and maybe beans in it but you couldn't tell. I asked for a cup and got a bowl and I don't think I would have even eaten a cup. The homemade angle really burned me this time.
We wanted a great diner experience (we like Woodsweather Cafe), but we left saying, "Ugh. Maybe this place can't fuck up breakfast." We had lunch that day, and I don't think we'll be back to even try breakfast. The walking dead wait for diners to hurry up so they can get your table. Having little space and these people hovering over you is obnoxious. We felt like these people were regulars and we had taken their special table.
The food is ok, but not great. JE will not go back there especially with Marco Polo just next door.
You can try it if you want. Jerry's Cafe is located at 1209 West 103rd Street in KCMO.
