2-18-12 Avenues Bistro

Because of a glitch in the kitchen, we were turned away from a new restaurant in Brookside. No big deal -- we just headed west to Avenues Bistro -- and we were very glad we did.

A beautiful dining room and affordable menu greeted us. Our meals are best described as divine.

JE had the basque chicken with potato casserole.

JE expected a small serving, but it was meal sized. Tender chicken breast pounded thin, coated in bread crumbs, topped with artichoke hearts, red peppers, melted cheese, prosciutto and sun-dried tomatoes...all for less than $11. It was absolutely delicious.

I had the steak frites which was an 8 oz filet with french fries, er, pomme frites.

I loved the steak and the garlic herb butter that was on it. The french fries were ok, but I would have rather preferred JE's potato casserole or even mashed or baked potato in their place. They're supposed to be famous for their pomme frites, but I would have even like McDonalds' salty fries instead of these. The house made ketchup (I'm stretching here because I didn't ask if it was house made) was good. Maybe the pomme frites would have been better with their dipping sauces, but I wasn't asked if I wanted anything other than ketchup and I didn't know about the other sauces until after the meal. The steak is a smaller version of their dinner item which came in at $16 (the dinner menu lists it as $26!). I thought it was a bargain.

I also noticed on their lunch menu that their desserts were $3 instead of the usual $6 during dinner. One item caught my eye, the German apple spice cake. And it was so good I could have slapped someone.

It had a drizzle of caramel and something else around it and it was topped with a cream cheese frosting and pecans (or were those walnuts?). Whatever the case, it was warm, spiced and delicious. If the steak hadn't filled me up, this definitely put me at full level.

This place is in our backyard and we will be going here again. They have early bird dining deals and their lunch menu is a bargain. JE gets their lobster ravioli for lunch as his office isn't far from here and he raves about that too.
