4-15-12 The Stack BBQ

Our latest BBQ adventure comes from a newly opened (January), former site of Smoke Stack restaurant on Wornall, which outshines its predecessor. Welcome to The Stack BBQ.

Parking in the lot was a challenge that day as there was a birthday party going on at the Polka Dot Lounge next door. We were lucky to find a spot quickly.

JE and I visited the old restaurant several times together and with family. We liked the food then, but we thought some of the older waitresses were a bit rude. That has changed. The staff is much more friendly and provided great service.

The dining room seemed to be the same, but looked to be cleaned up (after the remodel we suppose).

A quick run down of what we experienced:

  • Most of the people we saw come in were for carry-out orders while we were there
  • They have lunch specials, even on Saturdays!
  • They're part of FrontFlip (a free app for Android and iPhones) and we won a free appetizer on our visit

First our free appetizer of fried mushrooms. There were 8 huge mushrooms that came with a side of ranch and they were delicious. It was hard to finish all of them off but if you love mushrooms and fried things, you'll like these and finish them all like we did.

We both ordered platters. The platters come with one or two choices of meat, coleslaw, fries (too many) and toast for $8 and is part of their lunch special Monday through Saturday.

JE ordered a sliced meat combo platter with burnt ends and sausage. JE liked the combo platter although he thought there were more fries than meat. He thought the sauce was excellent and not overpowering.

I ordered a sliced meat combo platter with beef and turkey. The smoked turkey and the brisket were both mouth-watering. I'm getting hungry again just writing the review.

We definitely left there full. Maybe it was due to all the fried mushrooms and the heaping amount of fries, but regardless, the food was good and was probably better than the previous BBQ joint which was there.

When we go back, we'll have to try the cheesy corn bake, a BBQ side that is a favorite of ours. We would have ordered it for an appetizer, but didn't see it on the menu until it was too late.

Support this new business just south of Waldo. Your only other options close by in this BBQ desert are Gates at 103rd and State Line (blech) and BB's Lawnside at 85th and Troost. The Stack should be your first choice. There are no screaming people at the counter asking if they "can help you" and no bar full of drunks and loud music.
