6-9-12 Harry's Country Club

Country singer Travis Tritt wrote a song about being a member of a country club. We would definitely be members of Harry's Country Club in the River Market, despite the negative reviews on Urbanspoon. We were happy to say that the bad reviews were completely unwarranted but they were from a few years ago so maybe this place has changed.

If this restaurant had one dusty working light bulb and played Exene Cervenka's music from "The Excitement of Maybe" you would think you were in the middle of the desert next to a last chance gas station (that analogy may be lost on 99% of us, but that's what JE wrote so...) But it isn't...although it is hard to find parking on a weekend in River Market. The place is cool, perfectly decorated and has a great atmosphere.

My parents would love this place. They're part of the Grand Ole Opry crowd who like country music. I like country music too and with it comes a long line of history that is displayed inside. From all the pictures of country performers passed, to a rhinestone jump suit on the walls, to the old twangy music being played over speakers, this place crows laid back country.

JE asked the waiter if he should get the burger or the Cuban sandwich. The waiter suggested the Cuban so he got that and a side of three cheese mac & cheese. I was personally shocked that he had never eaten a Cuban sandwich before, but I digress.

JE thought the sandwich and mac & cheese was really good. JE thought that he would have had to get the fries and the side of mac & cheese as a side and the smart waiter subbed the mac & cheese for a $1 for the fries. Good call. There was an orphaned fry on the plate and that made everything just fine. He thinks he can make the Cuban sandwiches at home now that he knows what they are.

I decided to go with the city fried chicken which was on special for $8.95 with a drink purchase. I subbed out the garlic grits for mashed potatoes and gravy (I'm not a fan of grits). It came with a side of green beans as well. My substitution was also only a $1.

My order was just as good. The gravy on the potatoes and chicken had a little heat to it which was nice. The chicken was like chicken fried steak but it was chicken breast. The potatoes were creamy and good.

On the contrary, I did not care for the seasoned green beans. I like green beans and will eat them up, but for some reason (maybe it was the allergy spray from earlier in the day), these green beans tasted like an ashtray. Now I've never licked an ashtray or smoked, but sometimes if you inhale a smell, you can taste it. I could not that taste get over the taste of them so I left them for the angels.

One of my favorite pies is key lime pie and as they had it on the menu, I ordered a piece. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be. They were out of all pies. Drats.

The server and service at Harry's was really attentive without being overbearing. Our cute waiter got refills promptly and asked questions throughout the meal to ensure we were doing ok.

Harry's has live music on some nights and it would be just as fun to sit and drink at the bar in the evenings.

Become a member of Harry's Country Club in the River Market. It's a cool place, with great service, little to no kids and good food.
